Join Lynn Cassells, co-owner of Lynbreck Croft, for an immersive learning day focused on planting, growing and working with trees, surrounded by the inspiring landscapes of the Cairngorms National Park.
WHAT TO EXPECT
As climate changes accelerates and weather extremes become more frequent, the need to create diverse, resilient landscapes grows ever more important. Trees play a critical role in the landscape, providing essential shade, shelter and forage, as well as slowing the flow of water off the hills, maintaining soil health and enabling food production.
This immersive learning day provides a unique opportunity to find out everything you want to know about tree planting, tree protection and woodland management at the multi-award-winning Lynbreck Croft, owned by Lynn Cassells and Sandra Baer. With 28 years of combined practical experience, Lynn and Sandra are creating a landscape at Lynbreck where trees and food production go hand in hand.
With practical hands-on learning opportunities and Lynn’s expert guidance, this course will help you to observe and understand the varied ways that trees are nurtured, managed and utilised on a working croft, emphasising their central place within a landscape that benefits nature, climate and people.
The Learning Day will cover:
- tree planting best practise
- small and large scale planting schemes, from wood pasture to continuous woodland blocks
- planning and planting an orchard
- creating shelterbelts
- tree protection and deer/rabbit management
- existing woodland and decaying wood management
- grazing of herbivores and pigs in woodlands
- creating and establishing hedgerows
- planting and harvesting tree hay for livestock
- firewood processing and making charcoal for domestic use

Timings
Arrival from 9.30am for tea/coffee/biscuits, for a 10am start. The day will wrap up around 4pm. Please bring your own packed lunch.
How do I get there?
By car:
Coming from Grantown on Spey, take the A95 in the direction of Aberdeen. Shortly after you pass Grantown East on your left hand side, take the right hand turn on to the A939 Highland Tourist route. Follow this road for about 4 miles and Lynbreck will be on your right hand side (large layby with a track going down hill and a red egg box).

What size are your groups?
The All About Trees Learning Day is for groups of up to 12 participants.
Is the course suitable for me?
All of the day will be spent outdoors (no matter the weather), sometimes walking over rough and wet ground. Please wear appropriate clothing. We would recommend sturdy, waterproof boots or wellies.

How does my custom benefit rewilding?
After covering the necessary costs associated with delivering the course, we are left with a surplus which, unlike a commercial tour operator with shareholders, is reinvested into our rewilding work.

In doing so, we can demonstrate that rewilding is an economically viable land use in Scotland.
VENUE
This Learning Day will be run from the award-winning Lynbreck Croft, which has become celebrated for the high-profile wilder farming practiced by owners Lynn Cassells and Sandra Baer – described in their book ‘Our Wild Farming Life”. Since the land was acquired in 2016, a successful regenerative food business has been established and the site operates as a base for wilder farming courses. The land benefits from the presence of native pigs and cattle, and 30,000 native trees have been planted. Lynbreck Croft is testimony to the ability to produce food regeneratively in an upland setting in a way that benefits nature and drives ecosystem recovery.
