Launched in 2024, Loch Abar Mòr is a nature restoration partnership working at a regional scale, to enable communities across Lochaber to thrive in an ecologically diverse and climate resilient landscape.
Convened by SCOTLAND: The Big Picture, the partnership brings together land managers, communities and businesses, who steward more than 100,000 acres of land between them, and share an ambition to restore and reconnect a thriving network of natural habitats. These partners are working together to return more wildlife to the landscape and create new social and economic opportunities for the region’s communities.
As part of its work on species recovery, the Loch Abar Mòr partnership is working in collaboration with SCOTLAND: The Big Picture and Beaver Trust to explore the potential reintroduction of beavers to the River Lochy catchment.
Throughout summer 2026, community discussions will be held to discuss the opportunities and challenges, seeking to gather local people's views on the potential return of this native species to suitable waterbodies and wetland habitats across the catchment.
