NRN PARTNER: West Moss-side Organic Farm

WEST MOSS-SIDE ORGANIC FARM

Location:
Central region
Area Committed:
148 acres

West Moss-side Farm sits on low ground in Carse of Stirling. Part of the landholding lies with Flanders Moss National Nature Reserve – a unique ‘raised bog’ and peatland habitat, the largest intact example in the British Isles. Now managed as an organic farm with native breed Shetland cattle, West Moss-side is rich in wildlife, with snipe, curlew, water vole and beaver all having returned after periods of absence. As well as being a working farm, the site operates as an arts and crafts centre, and a renovated barn provides multi-use amenity space.

Key rewilding commitments:

  • MORE NATIVE WOODLAND: Increase woodland complexity by undertaking ground flora translocation in new woods.
  • MORE SPACE FOR WATER: Ensure wetness of peat on the raised bog.
  • WILDER RIVERS: Undertake enrichment planting of native broadleaf tree species in the riparian zone of the canalised Goodie Water.
  • JOINED-UP HABITATS: Remove redundant fencing.
  • REINSTATE NATURAL GRAZING: Continue using native cattle for habitat benefits.
  • CREATE REWILDING BUSINESS: Utilise creative arts and on-site amenity space to connect people with the land and nature.
