TIGH COILLE CHROMAIG
Culrain
50 acres
Tigh Coille Chromaig overlooks the Dornoch Firth and contains a rich habitat mosaic of Scots pine and juniper woodland, interspersed with silver birch, willow, rowan, and open bog. While the landholding features a marker for the seventeenth century Battle of Carbisdale, the site is now firmly future facing – with the owners’ meaningful commitment to a journey of ecological restoration. This will involve overcoming ongoing challenges, notably the browsing by high numbers of sika deer, and the removal of non-native conifers which have spread from neighbouring plantations. In due course, the owners plan to use the site both for a home and to develop nature-based enterprises that align with and support long-term ecosystem recovery.
Key rewilding commitments:
- MORE NATIVE WOODLAND: Identify optimum solution for deer exclusion or control – to facilitate natural woodland regeneration.
- RETURN MISSING SPECIES: Undertake enrichment planting of missing or poorly represented native tree species (hazel, wych elm and sessile oak) – using appropriate protection from deer.
- LET NATURE LEAD: Remove non-native tree species which have the potential to negatively impact or modify the habitat (Rhododendron ponticum, lodgepole pine and sitka spruce) .
- CREATE REWILDING BUSINESS: Develop nature-friendly enterprises involving the sustainable harvesting of wild botanicals and / or off-grid ecotourism accommodation
