KYLE & LOCHALSH COMMUNITY TRUST
The Plock is a rocky outcrop with a fascinating history, a last toehold on the mainland on the way to Skye. In its time it has been croft land, a centre for the herring industry, in military ownership, and most recently a golf course. It is now in ownership of Kyle & Lochalsh Community Trust, and serves as a valued amenity space for both locals and tourists - a place to hike, bathe in nature, and take in the stunning views of Loch Alsh and the far Cuillin mountains. With gorse and bracken scrub, dry heath, birch woodland, peatbog, ponds and a rocky shoreline, this site provides a microcosm of habitats where nature is already bouncing back.
Key rewilding commitments:
- MORE SPACE FOR WATER: Explore opportunities to create new waterbodies and better connect existing waterbodies.
- RETURN MISSING SPECIES: Carry out enrichment planting of poorly represented or missing tree species (hazel, Scots pine, aspen, wych elm).
- LET NATURE LEAD: Remove litter and other human detritus from the shoreline; remove invasive rhododendron ponticum.
- CONNECT WITH COMMUNITY: Highlight the area’s heritage with a reconstructed viking longhouse; and continue to provide a valued recreation space for the whole community.
